Born in Ireland; British soldier; regiment sent to Canada at time of Fenian Raids, 1867; participated in Wolseley's Red River expedition as an advance scout, 1870; sent across the prairies to report on the smallpox epidemic, 1870-1871; made a trip to Lake Athabasca and on to Victoria via the Peace River, 1872-1873; rest of life spent elsewhere in British Empire (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography). // Archibald, Adams George (Sir): 1814-1892. Born in Nova Scotia; proponent of Confederation; Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and NWT, 1870-1873; Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia, 1873-1883; in House of Commons, 1888-1891; for services in Manitoba created C.M.G., 1872; created K.C.M.G., 1886 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography). // Also published as Report by Lieutenant Butler (69th Regt.) of his journey from Fort Garry to Rocky Mountain House and back: Under instructions from the lieut.-governor of Manitoba, during the winter of 1870-71 , Ottawa: Printed by Times Print. & Pub. Co., 1871 (1 leaf, 29p.). Includes instructions to Butler from Lieutenant-Governor Archibald. Report was also printed as an appendix in Peel 638. Butler was commissioned to report to Archibald on the smallpox epidemic raging among the Natives.
